CITIES WITHOUT GROUND

The number of shopping malls in China has more than doubled in the last decade, and this trend is continuing. This rapid expansion has led to a decline in public livability. However, when we shift our focus to the exterior of these complexes, can design innovate beyond the constraints of external public spaces?

In this project, we analyzed data from 33 rail stations in Shanghai using snapshot observations and statistical analysis based on Jan Gehl's theory of public space. The purpose of this research is to leverage the results for public space improvement, to summarize the characteristics of human-centered spaces, and to develop a "feedback-adjustment" loop to guide design practices.
